Treebook 6 Treebooks are freebooks. They are published by Treemail according to the criteria of free, independent, original thinking and high quality warranted by the scientific performance of its authors. Treebook 3: Chinantec shifting cultivation: InTERAcTIVE landuse. A case-study in the Chinantla, Mexico, on secondary vegetation, soils and crop performance under indigenous shifting cultivation. Hans van der Wal; 1999. Treebook 4: An exploratory study to improve the predictive capacity of the Crop Growth Monitoring System as applied by the European Commission. Iwan Supit; 2000. Treebook 5: Five thousand years of sustainability? A case study on Gedeo land use (Southern Ethiopia). Tadesse Kippie; 2002. Preface The title of the present report by Jane Shaw is too modest. It does not cover the true scope of her analysis. Indeed, the core is not the feeding regime of cattle in a US region, but the sustainable management of a landscape, keyed to optimize beef production by durably keeping both the environment and the cattle in good health. The same dilemma, says recent research, is at the core of old, traditional land use in faraway countries where modernism has not succeeded in eradicating it. and so many others, substantiated this. Remmers in the Mediterranean and postgraduate work by Domptail in France, Cieremans in Russia and now Jane Shaw in the US showed this constant concern to exist in temperate climates too. All systems sustained successfully during centuries to millennia, rested on biological resistance against ecological or genetic wear and tear, combined with high long-term productivity, with the following essentials. Remmers' " reproduction of biodiversity " is their motor, not today's museum-like " conservation ". Wherever local vegetation once was forest, a mosaic of small fields, hedges, woodlots formed the basic pattern, not huge single-crop fields. Finally, an ever-continuing balance among ecological maintenance, economical flexibility and the highest compatible production was the priority. Maximal biomass production of one crop or product in itself never was the unique objective. Twentieth-century " organic " forms of land use increasingly converge to this pattern. Every method of land use has its own science, geared to its basic assumptions. In industrial and monocrop systems, statistical analysis and ensuing computer models logically support research of systems basically conceived as populations of identical crop plants or domestic animals on homogeneous substrates. Deviations of standard sizes, numbers or weights are seen as statistical errors, aberrant values due either to errors of measurement, …

Quality of retail beef from two grass-based production systems in comparison with conventional beef.

Seventy beef strip loins (Longissimus dorsi) were sampled, originating from labels prescribing pasturing (PS, suckler beef; PF, finished steers or heifers), from conventional production (CH, heifers; CB, young bulls), and from a label producing intensively fattened young bulls (LB) and prescribing specific husbandry conditions but not grazing. Samples were purchased in autumn and spring (1:1) f...

Effect of pasture finishing on the meat characteristics and intramuscular fatty acid profile of steers of the Rubia Gallega breed.

The Rubia Gallega cattle breed is the most important stock for beef production in Spain. A study about the influence of feeding systems on beef quality is needed. Comparison of the effect of a pasture finishing system and an indoors finishing system (maize silage and concentrate) on the meat quality and intramuscular fatty acid profile of Rubia Gallega steers (slaughter age 30 months) was deter...

Carcass Characteristics of Forage-Finished Cattle Produced in Hawai‘i

It is extremely difficult for the Hawai‘i beef industry to compete against the concentrate-finished beef that dominates the U.S. beef industry because of our state’s lack of grain production, lack of economy of scale, and an inefficient processing segment. Nevertheless, produc ers continue to keep their faith in the local and emerg ing niche markets, looking for opportunities for mar keting ...

Composition and quality differences between the longissimus and infraspinatus muscles for several groups of pasture-finished cattle.

Samples of longissimus (LT) and infraspinatus (IS) muscles from five contrasting groups of pasture-finished cattle (n=7/group) were assessed for quality and composition characteristics in order to determine whether features of pasture-finished beef reported previously apply across different muscles and different classes of cattle. The cattle were not raised together or slaughtered at the same t...

Effect of pasture vs. concentrate feeding with or without antioxidants on carcass characteristics, fatty acid composition, and quality of Uruguayan beef.

Thirty Hereford steers were finished either on pasture (n=10) or concentrate (n=20) to determine dietary and antioxidant treatment effects on carcass characteristics, fatty acid composition, and quality of Uruguayan beef. Half of the steers finished on concentrate were supplemented with 1000 I.U. vitamin E head(-1) day(-1) for 100 days. Postmortem vitamin C was added to ground beef (0.05% v/w) ...
